Day 1: Akagera National Park Safari

  • Morning (7:00 AM – 1:00 PM): Full-Day Game Drive Start your day with an early morning game drive in Akagera National Park. Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park and is home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), as well as giraffes, zebras, and hundreds of bird species. A full-day game drive typically takes you from the southern entrance to the northern gate, offering diverse landscapes from open plains to woodland and wetlands. It’s a great opportunity to spot a wide variety of animals and take stunning photos.
  • Lunch (1:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Picnic Lunch in the Park Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated picnic site within the park. This is a chance to rest and refuel while still being surrounded by the natural beauty of the park.
  • Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Boat Trip on Lake Ihema After your game drive, head to Lake Ihema for a boat safari. This is a unique way to see the park, as you’ll get up close to hippos and crocodiles. The lake is also a haven for birdwatchers, with a large variety of water birds to be seen.
  • Evening (6:00 PM onwards): Dinner and Relaxation After an adventurous day, return to your accommodation in or around Kayonza. Enjoy a relaxing dinner, perhaps trying some local Rwandan dishes. Many lodges offer beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere to unwind.

Day 2: Local Culture and Nature

  • Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Explore Local Markets and the Town Spend your morning exploring the town of Kayonza. Visit the local markets to experience the vibrant atmosphere and interact with the friendly residents. You can find traditional crafts, fresh produce, and a glimpse into daily Rwandan life. Consider visiting a community-based tourism project, like Akagera Neighbors, to learn more about the local culture and way of life.
  • Lunch (12:00 PM – 1:30 PM): Local Food Experience Find a local restaurant or café in Kayonza for lunch. This is a great opportunity to sample authentic Rwandan food and support a local business.
  • Afternoon (1:30 PM – 4:00 PM): Visit a Coffee or Tea Plantation The Eastern Province is known for its agriculture. Take a guided tour of a local tea or coffee plantation. You’ll learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of these key Rwandan exports. Some tours offer a chance to participate in the process and, of course, taste the final product.
  • Late Afternoon (4:00 PM onwards): Hiking or Birdwatching Kayonza is surrounded by beautiful hills and landscapes, making it a perfect spot for hiking or birdwatching. You can take a guided hike to enjoy the scenery or go on a birdwatching tour to see some of the area’s many bird species, including the African grey crowned crane.
