A two-day tour in Gatsibo offers a unique blend of cultural immersion and wildlife adventure, primarily centered around its pastoralist heritage and the proximity to Akagera National Park.

Day 1: Cultural Immersion and Historical Sites

Morning: Journey and Historical Exploration

  • Morning Drive: Start your day early from Kigali and drive to Gatsibo. The journey takes about two hours, offering scenic views of Rwanda’s rolling hills and countryside.
  • Urutare Rwa Ngarama: Your first stop is the historically significant “Stone of Ngarama” in Ngarama Sector. This is a large, flat rock with natural, footprint-like features attributed to King Ruganzu Ndoli. You’ll hear the fascinating legends and local stories associated with this site. It’s a great introduction to the rich cultural history of the region.
  • Utubindi Twa Rubona: Next, head to Utubindi Twa Rubona, another cultural heritage site. This site features pot-like carvings on a large granite rock, also linked to King Ruganzu II Ndoli. The site provides a glimpse into the ancient history and folklore of Rwanda.

Afternoon: Pastoralist Experience and Local Life

  • Pastoralist Village Tour: In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting a pastoralist community. Gatsibo is known for its strong cattle culture. You can participate in activities such as:
    • Learning how to milk a cow by hand.
    • Witnessing or participating in the traditional preparation of milk products like yogurt and ghee.
    • Learning about the deep cultural value of cattle in Rwandan society.
    • Enjoying a traditional lunch with the community, which might include fresh milk products.
  • Gishuro Cultural Village: If time allows, you can visit the Gishuro Cultural Village. This community-based initiative showcases traditional Rwandan music, dance, and crafts. It’s a fantastic way to support local communities and get an authentic cultural experience.

Evening: Relaxation and Preparation

  • Check-in: Settle into your accommodation. Gatsibo has a few guesthouses and hotels, but for a more comfortable stay and better access to the park the next day, it’s often recommended to stay at one of the lodges near the entrance of Akagera National Park.
  • Dinner: Enjoy a relaxing dinner, perhaps with some local Rwandan dishes.

Day 2: Akagera National Park Safari Adventure

Morning: Safari Game Drive

  • Early Start: Wake up before sunrise for an early start to Akagera National Park. This is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals are most active during the cooler hours of the morning.
  • Full-Day Game Drive: Embark on a full-day game drive. Akagera is a savannah park and home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo), as well as giraffes, zebras, hyenas, and various antelopes. Your driver and a park guide will help you spot wildlife and navigate the park’s network of roads.
  • Lunch: Have a packed lunch at a designated picnic spot within the park, with stunning views of the landscape.

Afternoon: Boat Cruise and Departure

  • Lake Ihema Boat Cruise: In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. This offers a different perspective and a chance to see hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of water birds, including the iconic African fish eagle and the elusive shoebill stork.
  • Final Drive and Souvenirs: Conclude your boat cruise and begin your journey back towards the park’s exit. You can stop at a local market to purchase souvenirs, such as traditional crafts or coffee, before heading back to Kigali.
  • Return to Kigali: The drive back to Kigali is a great time to reflect on the diverse experiences of your two-day tour.
