About this tour

Day 1: History, Art, and Modernity

The first day is dedicated to understanding Rwanda’s past, celebrating its creative present, and exploring its modern city life.

Morning (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM): The Kigali Genocide Memorial

Start with the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi. This is an essential and emotionally demanding visit that provides the foundation for understanding modern Rwanda’s journey of healing and resilience. Allow at least three hours for a thorough, reflective visit using the audio guide.

Lunch (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM): Quiet Reflection

Have a quiet lunch at a café near the memorial or in the city center.

Afternoon (1:30 PM – 4:00 PM): Contemporary Art Hub

Visit the Inema Arts Center in Kacyiru. This hub of contemporary Rwandan art features resident artists, a gallery, and often has live music or cultural activities. It’s an excellent place to see Rwanda’s thriving creative side.

Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM): Civic and Historical Museums

Choose to visit one of Kigali’s specialized museums:

Campaign Against Genocide Museum: Located in the Parliament building, focusing on the RPF/Inkotanyi’s role in stopping the genocide.

Rwanda Art Museum (former Presidential Palace Museum): Located near the airport, showcasing modern Rwandan art and featuring the debris of the former presidential jet.

Evening (6:30 PM onwards): Sunset and Fine Dining

Head to one of Kigali’s excellent neighborhoods for dinner (like Kiyovu or Kimihurura). Enjoy a pre-dinner drink at a rooftop bar (like the Marriott or The Retreat) for a panoramic sunset view of the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

Day 2: Local Life, Vistas, and Hands-on Culture

Day two focuses on local markets, community engagement, and the natural beauty surrounding the capital.

Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): The Local Pulse – Kimironko Market

Explore Kimironko Market, one of Kigali’s largest and most vibrant open-air markets. This is a sensory experience where you can buy fresh produce, local spices, and fabric. You can have a tailor measure you for a custom-made outfit in minutes!

Lunch (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM): Market Street Food

Have lunch near Kimironko or try a local street food lunch (like grilled bananas and beans) to fully immerse yourself.

Afternoon (1:00 PM – 4:30 PM): Community and Culinary Culture

Take a walking tour of the diverse Nyamirambo neighborhood, perhaps organized through the Nyamirambo Women’s Center (NWC). The NWC offers insightful tours, including potential opportunities for a local cooking class or kitenge (fabric) workshop.

Late Afternoon (4:30 PM – 6:30 PM): Mount Kigali Adventure

Take a moto-taxi up Mount Kigali. While not a traditional mountain, it’s the highest hill offering the most spectacular, sprawling views of the city and the countryside. You can visit Fazenda Sengha for horse riding, zip-lining, or simply enjoy a beverage overlooking the city.

Evening (7:30 PM onwards): Farewell Feast

Enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner at a restaurant featuring modern Rwandan fusion cuisine or an international spot to reflect on your tour of this dynamic city.
