GISAGARA

Gisagara district is the one eight districts of southern province, the district is famous on its unique tourist’s attractions.

Save (I Save) is a small town and sector located in the west of Gisagara District in the Southern Province of Rwanda. It holds historical significance as the site of the first Catholic mission in Rwanda, established by Bishop John Joseph Hirth in 19002. The first church in Rwanda was built in Save, making it a notable destination for religious tourism in Rwanda.

Save Parish: The first Catholic church in Rwanda, originally a thatched structure, later replaced by a brick building. It is a significant site for religious pilgrims and those interested in Rwanda’s religious history. Mother House of the Benebikira Sisters: Located in Save, this is the central house of the Benebikira Sisters, a religious congregation founded in Rwanda.

The Mukindo of Makwaza

This is a site in Rwanda particularly known for its historical and cultural heritage. It is located in the Mukindo sector of Gisagara District, near the Rwanda-Burundi border. The site is associated with King Ruganzu Ndoli, a prominent figure in Rwandan history, who is said to have used the Makwaza Hill as a hideout. The Makwaza Hill is not just an ordinary hill; it holds a rich history and is respected by the local population. The hill is surrounded by eucalyptus and pine trees and is situated near the Akanyaru River, which serves as the natural border with Burundi.
