This 3-day tour is designed to immerse you in the natural beauty and cultural richness of Nyamasheke District, with a special focus on the stunning Lake Kivu, the iconic Canopy Walkway, and the serene beaches of Kumbya and Shara.
The best time to visit Nyamasheke is during the dry seasons: from June to September and from mid-December to mid-February. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and the hiking trails are easier to navigate. The landscape is also lush and green, making it ideal for photography.
Day 1: Arrival and Lake Kivu Exploration
Morning: Arrive in Nyamasheke District, nestled between Lake Kivu and Nyungwe National Park. Check into your accommodation and get settled.
Afternoon: Lake Kivu Boat Trip: After lunch, head to the shores of Lake Kivu. You can arrange for a boat trip to explore the lake’s beautiful islands. The boat ride offers a serene experience and a chance to see the local fishing boats. You can also visit some of the islands like Amahoro (Peace) Island or Napoleon Island, which is known for its bat colony.
Late Afternoon: Kumbya Peninsula: Visit the Kumbya Peninsula. Kumbya is a beautiful, tranquil spot with a pristine natural habitat. You can relax on the beach, swim in the bilharzia-free waters of Lake Kivu, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The peninsula is also home to over a hundred species of birds and several groups of sea otters.
Evening: Enjoy a traditional Rwandan dinner at a local restaurant or at your lodge, sampling local cuisine.
Day 2: Canopy Walkway and Nyungwe National Park
Morning: Canopy Walkway: After an early breakfast, travel to Nyungwe National Park, a short distance from Nyamasheke. Head to the Uwinka Reception Center, the starting point for the famous Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walk is a thrilling suspension bridge, 50 meters in length and suspended high above the forest floor. It offers a unique bird’s-eye view of the ancient rainforest and a chance to spot primates and a variety of bird species. The walk is typically a 1-2 hour hike.
Afternoon: Waterfall Hike: After the Canopy Walk, you can choose to embark on a guided hike to Ndambarare Waterfall. This tranquil spot is perfect for relaxation and photography. The hike takes you through the lush forest, where you can see a variety of plants and wildlife.
Late Afternoon: Shara Beach: After your adventures in Nyungwe, make your way to Shara Beach. Located along the Congo Nile Trail, this route offers beautiful views of the lake and surrounding villages. Shara Beach is another idyllic spot to relax and take in the stunning scenery of Lake Kivu.
Evening: Return to your accommodation in Nyamasheke for a restful evening.
Day 3: Cultural Immersion and Departure
Morning: Coffee or Tea Plantation Tour: Nyamasheke is known for its scenic tea and coffee plantations. Start your day with a guided tour of a local plantation. Learn about the process of growing, harvesting, and processing tea or coffee. You’ll get to see the beautiful terraced hills and even sample some of the local produce.
Late Morning: Historical and Community Visit: Explore some of the district’s historical landmarks, learning about its role in Rwanda’s history. You can also visit a local village to experience the warm hospitality of the communities and learn about their unique traditions and daily lives.
