Ngoma District, with its rich cultural heritage and serene landscapes, offers a unique and authentic Rwandan experience. This 2-day itinerary is designed to immerse you in the local culture, history, and natural beauty, ensuring you hit all the key experiences you mentioned.

Day 1: Culture, History, and Art

Morning: Imigongo Art and Milking Experience: Begin your day with a visit to a local cooperative specializing in Imigongo art. This traditional art form, unique to the Eastern Province, uses cow dung to create intricate geometric patterns. You’ll have the opportunity to watch skilled artisans at work, learn about the historical significance of the art, and even try your hand at creating your own piece. Following this, you can participate in a traditional milking experience, where you’ll learn how to milk a cow by hand, a practice deeply ingrained in Rwandan culture.

Afternoon: Kibungo Culture and Banana Beer: The town of Kibungo (the administrative center of Ngoma) is a great place to experience local life. You’ll be introduced to the broader Kibungo culture, which is known for its agricultural roots and warm hospitality. You’ll then get a hands-on experience in one of Rwanda’s most iconic traditions: banana beer production. You will be guided through the process, from peeling and mashing the bananas to fermenting the mixture, and of course, get to taste the final product.

Evening: Lakeside Relaxation and Local Flavors: Head to one of Ngoma’s serene lakes, such as Lake Sake. Enjoy a relaxing evening by the water. You can either go for a short fishing experience with a local fisherman or simply enjoy the peaceful ambiance. Dinner will feature local delicacies at a lakeside restaurant, giving you a taste of the region’s fresh cuisine.

Day 2: History, Nature, and Local Life

Morning: Zaza and Rukumberi Swamp: Start the day by visiting Zaza Catholic Cathedral, which holds a significant place in Rwanda’s history as one of the first Catholic cathedrals in the Eastern Province. The site’s historical architecture and serene surroundings offer a moment for reflection. From there, you’ll travel to the Rukumberi swamp. This vast wetland is a haven for a diverse range of bird species and other wildlife. A guided walk or boat trip (depending on accessibility) will allow you to explore this unique ecosystem and its natural beauty.

Afternoon: Local Market Experience: No trip to a Rwandan district is complete without visiting its local market. You’ll go to a bustling local market in Ngoma, where you can witness the vibrant daily life of the community. Here, you’ll find everything from fresh produce and spices to local crafts and clothing. It’s a fantastic place to interact with locals, practice your bargaining skills, and buy authentic souvenirs.

Late Afternoon: Conclude your tour with a final meal or coffee in Ngoma town before beginning your journey back.
